Parent’s information Session: Wednesday evening Wednesday 4 August from 6pm to 7pm

Session 1: 6.00pm – 6.30pm in the Visitors centre theatrette
Supporting Young Peoples Career Transition Choices: the role of parents!
Parents are one of young people’s primary sources of information on transition options (whitely 2001), and it goes without saying that evidence shows that young people are more likely to make more informed decisions about their future when their parents are involved in the decision making, so with this in mind this year at the Canberra Careers Market we have a special guest speaker from the Brotherhood of St Laurence (BSL) in Victoria, Debbie Sperandio. The BSL research shows that 100% of parents want to be able to help their children with career decisions, and 80% of young people want their parents to be able to help them, with only 20% of parents having accurate and sufficient knowledge.

This session will inform you about what you need to know in order to provide this career and transition information to your young person, to help guide them into a career with a future.

Session 2: 6.30pm – 7.00pm in the Visitors centre theatrette
Career Changers Session

Fed up with what you are doing? Looking for greener pastures but not sure how to find them? Curious about who could guide you? Find out from members of the Career Development Association of Australia (CDAA) - professionals who have the skills and know-how to guide you in exploring options, gaining insight and making career decisions. Ann Villiers, President of the ACT Division CDAA will introduce Sue Crawford, Registered Psychologist and Personal and Career Development Advisor with Brumbies Rugby. Sue will give an overview of how career practitioners can support adult career changers, followed by a Q&A segment.

Session 3: 6.00pm – 7.00pm in the Marathon Room
Disability Education, Training and Employment Session

This will be a quiet, relaxed space where parents, carers and people with all kinds of disabilities are invited to come and hear from 4 disability agencies and services who will each give a short presentation on education, training and employment options. After the presentations the presenters or a representative of the organisation will be on a panel where there will be time to ask questions, seek answers and discuss how they can support with future careers for people with a disability.
